Né d’une démarche inductive et d’un positionnement subjectif, ce mémoire vise à explorer les différentes manières dont les Montréalais.e.s noir.e.s perçoivent leur identité dans le Montréal postcolonial. Si le postcolonial est ici considéré comme étant une suite du colonialisme, c’est parce que l’objectif est de comprendre comment les relations interculturelles ont évolué depuis la fondation et la colonisation de la ville, affectant ainsi la perception identitaire d’un groupe culturel par un autre. Il s’agit de comprendre comment les Montréalais.e.s noir.e.s se perçoivent en lien avec leur perception par autrui, leurs expériences dans la ville et au contact de l’Autre ou des médias. Une méthodologie de recherche qualitative a été employée pour mener 9 entrevues avec des personnes noires de plus de 25 ans ayant grandi à Montréal, et présentant des degrés variables d’engagement social public. C’est à partir d’une approche interculturelle postcoloniale, en faisant appel à des concepts identitaires et raciaux, qu’ont été étudiées les identifications et appartenances des personnes interviewé.e.s, leurs perceptions identitaires individuelle et collective, les nouvelles médiatiques qui les touchent, les sous-représentations et représentations stéréotypées de ces personnes. La dialectique qui intervient dans la perception de soi lorsque ces individus sont exclus, altérisés, ou vivent de l’assignation identitaire, a aussi été analysée.
