\nRESUMEN DE LA TESIS
\n

\nSUMMARY
\n
\nThis thesis undertakes a comparative analysis of the reception of Will Kymlicka’s and Gerd Baumann’s theories of cultural diversity in Spain. Both receptions started to take place in the mid 1990s, in a socio-political context characterised by the rise of immigration to Spain and the durability of minority nationalism. The intellectual context was characterised by the consolidations of both the philosophical transition and the institutionalisation of Sociocultural Anthropology in Spain.
\nThrough an analytical approach that combines tools from the Intellectual History and the Sociology of Philosophical and Scientific Knowledge, we depart ‒following P. Bourdieu‒ from the assumption that in the international circulation of ideas, imported theories are subject to local reconfigurations in the fields of reception. Within this framework, the thesis aims to address these questions:
\nHow and when and why were these theories imported to Spain?
\nHow did these theories become incorporated and reconfigured into the local contexts?
\nWhich social, political and intellectual phenomena can we relate these processes with?
\nAre there any identifiable patterns in these two processes?
\nThe answers to these questions show for instance, the links between both processes of intellectual importation and the modernisation and institutionalisation of Philosophy and Anthropology in Spain. At the same time, the thesis identifies the connections between both processes and the socio-political situation in contemporary Spain. Links are mainly established between both processes and the question of Catalan nationalism. Summarising, while Kymlicka has provided a theoretical framework for the legitimisation of Catalan nationalist claims within the normative coordinates of ‘Liberal Nationalism’, Gerd Baumann has developed a theoretical framework for analysing identity/difference construction as a response to his own confrontation to the ‘Catalan grammars of Identity/Alterity’.
\nTherefore, on the one hand, this thesis contributes to the reconstruction of an important dimension of the current history of the fields of Philosophy and Anthropology in Spain. On the other hand, the analysis goes beyond, showing the connections and relations between the social, political and academic spheres. Finally, the thesis shows the existence of patterns of intellectual importation and reconfiguration, based on the empirical evidences collected in two case studies.
