A forte presença animal ressalta como uma das características mais relevantes e abundantes da literatura que tem na criança o seu destinatário extratextual preferencial. Nos textos para a infância, os animais desempenham papéis distintos, assumindo-se muitas vezes como companheiros de jogos ou brincadeiras das personagens infantis, além de revelarem traços muito semelhantes a estas/às crianças, em concreto, o gosto pelo ar livre e pela natureza, o dinamismo e a liberdade. Determinadas espécies animais sobressaem e são alvo de um tratamento singular, tal é a assiduidade com que são textualmente revisitadas, em muitos casos decorrente do seu tradicional simbolismo. Um dos casos que merece destaque é o do cão, espécie especialmente amada por autores de épocas distintas da literatura portuguesa para a infância. Assim, a partir de uma selecção textual que integra quatro títulos, todos narrativos, de autoria distinta – a saber, Faísca Conta a sua História (1949), de Ilse Losa (Melle, Alemanha, 1913-Porto, 2006), O Cão Pastor (1989), de Maria Alberta Menéres (Vila Nova de Gaia, 1930), O Meu Vizinho é um Cão (2008), de Isabel Minhós Martins (Lisboa, 1974), e Gastão Vida de Cão (2010), de Rita Taborda Duarte (Lisboa, 1973) –, pretende-se concluir acerca da diversidade de figurações possíveis do animal em questão nos textos portugueses para a infância, mapeando algumas das suas mais assíduas representações. Quer possuindo a função narratológica de narrador na primeira pessoa, como na primeira obra mencionada, quer desempenhando um papel a si tradicionalmente associado, a de vigilante de um rebanho, como no caso da segunda, quer enquanto membro protagonista, tanto de uma galeria de animais personificados habitantes de um prédio (como no terceiro texto), como de uma família onde impera a inversão de papéis (como na última obra), o cão marca presença e distingue-se como um importante elemento para o funcionamento narrativo.
