Depuis l’échec référendaire de 1995, le Québec est traversé par une réflexion incessante sur les relations interculturelles. Le débat politique y est particulièrement préoccupé par le rapport majorité-minorités, qui apparaît désormais comme une question incontournable pour la sociologie politique. Ce rapport s’est trouvé au coeur des exercices de redéfinition de la nation québécoise occupant l'espace public à la fin des années 1990 et au début des années 2000. Ces exercices ont ceci en commun qu’ils sont tous soucieux de favoriser l'inclusion des minorités culturelles à la nation québécoise entraînant la transformation de la représentation du sujet politique québécois. Plus près de nous, la « crise des accommodements raisonnables » illustre la centralité des relations interculturelles dans les débats sur la nation. À ce propos, la voie du Québec serait celle de l’interculturalisme qu’il importerait de distinguer du multiculturalisme canadien. C’est à l’analyse de l’interculturalisme comme modèle de gestion de la diversité culturelle que l’auteur du mémoire convie le lecteur. Plus particulièrement, il s’agit d’accorder une attention particulière au modèle d’interculturalisme québécois du sociologue et historien Gérard Bouchard. Son modèle est abordé à la lumière des critiques que lui adressent quelques propositions nationalistes culturelles, républicaines et interculturelles de la gestion de la diversité sociale.
