En 2008, une nouvelle méthode appelée « méthode Sherbrooke » de contrôle de compactage in situ au moyen de la sonde de teneur en eau avait été développée par le groupe de la géotechnique environnementale de l’université de Sherbrooke, à des raisons de réduire les coûts et risques associés aux méthodes nucléaires, tout en gardant le temps de l’essai le plus rapide possible et obtenir des résultats fiables que ceux obtenus au moyen des méthodes destructives. La méthode Sherbrooke est basée sur les lectures de la sonde de teneur en eau enfoncée dans le sol à analyser. Les lectures stabilisées sont prises à l’aide d’un appareil portatif concis connecté à la sonde. Une courbe de calibration spécifique au sol est construite en laboratoire afin de convertir les lectures de la sonde en teneur en eau volumique. Avec l’aide d’équations connues de la géotechnique, la teneur en eau volumique est transformée en masse volumique sèche et conséquemment en teneur en eau massique Ce projet de maîtrise présente les limites de la méthode Sherbrooke, principalement les matériaux acceptables, les conditions requises d’application et raffine la méthodologie. Les effets de l’hypothèse principale consistant à saturer le sol complètement sans application de la pression, Sr=100%, ainsi que les effets de la densité relative, Gs, ont d’abord été minutieusement évalués. Une analyse comparative entre méthode Sherbrooke et celles étalons notamment la méthode au nucléodensimètre et la méthode au cône de sable a été par la suite faite.
