Introdução: O declínio das funções cognitivas pode ocorrer devido ao processo fisiológico de envelhecimento ou como resultado de um processo patológico. A depressão é uma perturbação da saúde mental considerada um fator de risco independente para o desenvolvimento futuro de demência, pelo que é importante averiguar a existência de uma associação entre a presença de sintomatologia depressiva e a existência de défices cognitivos no idoso. Materiais e Métodos: A amostra foi composta por 108 indivíduos com idade igual ou superior a 65 anos, que participaram no Rastreio Geriátrico à Covilhã. O teste usado para avaliar a presença de sintomatologia depressiva foi a Escala de Depressão Geriátrica – versão curta (GDS-15) e na avaliação da função cognitiva foi aplicado o Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Resultados: Na avaliação dos dados recolhidos verificou-se que 24,1% dos idosos inquiridos apresentou resultados sugestivos de depressão ligeira e 7,4% resultados sugestivos de depressão grave. Observou-se ainda que 38% dos idosos avaliados apresentaram resultados sugestivos de défice cognitivo ligeiro (DCL) e outros 38% resultados sugestivos de demência, e apenas 24,1% dos idosos obtiveram resultados indicativos de uma função cognitiva preservada. 27,78% dos idosos incluídos neste estudo apresentaram simultaneamente resultados sugestivos de depressão e de deterioração da função cognitiva: entre os idosos com sintomatologia depressiva verificou-se que quase 90% apresenta função cognitiva deteriorada. No entanto, não se verificou uma associação estatisticamente significativa entre os resultados obtidos na GDS-15 e os resultados obtidos no MoCA (p=0,103). Conclusão: Concluiu-se que a prevalência quer de perturbação depressiva quer de demência nesta amostra é superior à indicada na literatura, embora não tenha sido possível encontrar uma associação significativa entre as duas variáveis.
