Abstract
It was the purpose of this study to develop an \nestimate of the effectiveness of the Park Elementary School \nFour-Quarter Plan in terms of educational achievement and \nfinancial efficiency, particularly in comparison with \nanother Hayward elementary school that is operating under \nthe conventional school year. \nIn this study, an effort was made to develop same \npreliminary answers to such questions as the following: \n1. Have appreciable improvements in the student \nachievement level in selected skill subjects been gained \nwith the Park Four-Quarter Plan? \n2. How do achievement test scores in reading and \nmathematics compare between Park School and the Eden Gardens \nSchool which maintains a conventional school calendar? \n3. Is there any evidence that the shorter vacations \nin the quarter system result in less loss of learning than \nthe three-month vacations of the present semester system? \n4. What are the attitudes of participating children, \nparents, and teachers toward the Park program? \n5. What are the attitudes of non-participating \nteachers; do they regard the Four-Quarter Plan favorably? \n6. Have Park student attendance patterns been \naffected by the four-quarter schedule? \n7. How have Park School's operating costs been \nincreased by the implementation of the four-quarter system?
