Denne oppgaven handler om tragisk taushet: Taushet slik den manifesterer seg i en attisk tragedie, nemlig Aiskhylos’ Promethevs i lenker. Mens talekunst regnes som definerende for tragedien og dramasjangeren som sådan, er tausheten til sammenligning et lite utforsket område. Der de teoretiske undersøkelsene av fenomenet, mest kjent gjennom Walter Benjamins og Franz Rosenzweigs arbeid, sjeldent foretar nærlesninger av tragisk materiale, forsøker jeg, ved å lese Aiskhylos’ tragedie, å svare på spørsmålet om hva tragisk taushet faktisk er. Jeg foreslår at Promethevs’ taushet er tett knyttet opp til hans trass. I tragedien utvikles dette gjennom begrepet authadia: «selvnytelse» eller «trass». Jeg leser authadia som en etos, dog, en høyst særegen en. Mens etos i Aristoteles’ og Hegels poetikker og estetikker viser etos til et sted der tale og taushet slår over i sin motsetning, er authadia enten fullstendig taus eller for alltid talende. Jeg argumenterer for at talen slik vi finner den i Promethevs i lenker ikke bare gir etos til, men også benevner tragediens personer. Tausheten slik vi finner den i authadia setter på sin side i gang et metonymisk spill som motsetter seg entydig benevnelse. Dette relateres så til skyldspørsmålet. Mens omslaget fra uskyld til skyld kommer i stand gjennom tale, der en uskyldig etos forlates til fordel for en skyldig, foreslår jeg at den tause etosen befinner seg mellom de to. Jeg konkluderer med at den tragiske taushet, blant annet gjennom metonymi, avbryter tragediens benevnende og dømmende prosesser.
