Abstract
Research Background: It is likely that the number of elderly will grow the next few decades and therefore it is important to investigate their moral rights concerning their residency and homes, and it is important to do that from the standpoint of the elderly and their relatives. Purpose:The main purpose of this research was to examine the moral rights of the elderly, whether they live at home or in a nursing home.First, the questions what are moral rights, should be answered.The author believes that it is, amongst other, the self decision right and respect to ones will and wishes.Answers were searched to the research question "what are the moral rights of the elderly concerning residency and home from the perspective of the elderly themselves and relatives of the elderly?"Method: In this research the Vancouver School of doing Phenomenology was the methodology used, which is a qualitative research method.Focus groups were used for data gathering.The results were, on one hand, based on interviews with 20 older people who lived at home.The people were at the age of 76 -91 years old, three men and 17 women who lived in Reykjavk and Akureyri.On the other hand interviews were conducted with the families of elderly people that were moved from one place to another, unexpectedly and with very little notice.It was 6 people at the age of 50-69 years old.To protect the participants, locations will not be named. Results:In this study the elderly reviewed their moral rights, at their home, when preparing to move to a nursing home, and when living at a nursing home.The main results showed that the elderly prefer to live at home as long as possible, getting the necessary service at the time that suits them best.They want to have the right to move to a nursing home when it is time and they hope to avoid experiencing the insecurity, anxiety and pressure of waiting for a long time.When they move to a nursing home they prefer to have private rooms, with their belongings with them, so they can create a new home.They want to feel at home at the viii nursing home and that it gives them the feeling of safety and togetherness.They want to have control over their life as much as possible, within the frame of that which a typical household allows.If they would have to move to another location, which they felt should only be done if absolutely necessary, they want full consensus, they want to have good notice, and they want to be able to have at least two options to choose from about where to move.If moving would be absolutely necessary all the interviewee felt that it would have to be well prepared and with a good notice and preferable they would like to visit the new location, or at least get detailed information about it.The group of relatives strongly felt that if moving between nursing homes would be necessary, they wish that they and the elderly would be included in the decision-making process concerning the new location.Also that there would be ample timeframe given before moving, and that their loved ones would be able to have private rooms and their belongings with them. Conclusion:The participants explained the moral rights that they believe they should have and which obviously should be honored, but unfortunately that is not always the case.The conclusions that can be drawn from this study are mainly that human rights that have been legalized shall be honored and met, and also the regulations and the values that institutions have set.It is very important that the decision making parties consult with the elderly and their relatives and that their moral rights are honored.Relocation that is poorly prepared, carried out with short notice and not in consent with the people involved is likely to cause insecurity, dissatisfaction and threaten the health of the clients that are being moved.The current arrangement of service for the elderly does not facilitate the self decision right or the independence of the elderly.
