The Writing and the Bronze: \nCommemoration as Historiography

Abstract
Historic monuments are the most public and recognized forms of commemoration. In Canada, as around the world, many monuments have come under fire recently for celebrating a vision of the past that is no longer palatable to large segments of the population. The heroes and events they enshrine have been denounced by many as tributes to racism, yet they are valued by others as aspects of our collective history and a celebration of our national heritage. Both these positions gloss over the complexity of the historical act of raising monuments and interpreting their historical meanings. Monuments in Canada, like all forms of commemoration, are reflections of the historiographical and methodological trends contemporary to the discipline of history at the time of their creation. Changes in methods and interpretations have thus also affected their meaning over time. Thus, monuments are not straightforward representations of history but, instead, layered expressions of historiography in physical form. Ascribing to them singular meanings obscures the complexity of the societies that constructed them and simplifies their connections to public life. Résumé: Les monuments historiques sont les formes les plus visibles et les plus reconnues de commémoration. Au Canada, comme partout dans le monde, de nombreux monuments ont récemment été critiqués parce qu'ils célèbrent une vision du passé qui n'est plus acceptable pour de larges pans de la population. Les héros et les événements qu'ils louangent ont été dénoncés par beaucoup comme des hommages au racisme; pourtant, ils sont appréciés par d'autres comme des aspects de l'histoire collective et une célébration du patrimoine national. Ces deux positions font abstraction de la complexité de l'acte historique qui consiste à ériger des monuments et à interpréter leur signification historique. Au Canada, les monuments, comme toute forme de commémoration, reflètent des tendances historiographiques et méthodologiques qui avaient cours en histoire au moment de leur création. Les changements de méthodes et d'interprétations ont donc aussi modifié leur signification au fil du temps. Ainsi, les monuments ne sont-ils pas la simple représentation de l'histoire, mais plutôt l'expression stratifiée de l'historiographie sous forme physique. Attribuer aux monuments une signification univoque occulte la complexité des sociétés qui les ont érigés et simplifie leur rapport à la vie publique.
