O objetivo desta revisão sistemática foi avaliar a função mastigatória em indivíduos adultos com Disfunção Temporomandibular (DTM), analisar a qualidade metodológica e sumariar os resultados encontrados. Metodologia: A pesquisa foi realizada na base de dados Pubmed/MEDLINE, SCOPUS e motores de busca Ebsco Host - Dentistry & Oral Science e CINAHL. Adicionalmente, foi realizada uma busca na literatura cinzenta, incluindo Opengrey e Google Scholar, além de uma pesquisa manual da lista de referência dos estudos incluídos para complementar a busca. Os artigos elegíveis que cumpriram os critérios de inclusão e exclusão predefinidos foram avaliados, de forma independente, por dois investigadores. A qualidade metodológica de cada artigo foi avaliada através da escala Newcastle-Ottawa (NOS). Resultados: Um total de 6 artigos mostraram resultados significativos da presença de alteração na função mastigatória em pacientes com DTM. Entretanto, foi verificado que os estudos não apresentaram convergência em todos os parâmetros analisados, nomeadamente, número de ciclos mastigatórios, força de mordida, duração do ciclo de mastigação, atividade muscular associada e eficácia da mastigação. Sugere-se que este resultado sofra influência da falta de concordância metodológica entre as diferentes técnicas de avaliação que utilizam a goma ou pastilha de mascar como ferramenta. Conclusão: Indivíduos com DTM apresentam alterações em alguns fatores do padrão mastigatório, mantendo a eficiência da mastigação. Não obstante, a interpretação dos dados deve ser feita com precaução uma vez que se baseiam em resultados de apenas 6 estudos originais.
