Beam Transmission Efficiency Measurement of the Injector System of the Canadian Light Source for the Top-up Mode of Operation

Abstract
The beam transmission efficiency was measured in terms of charge through the CLS accelerator complex to determine the performance of the injector system for top-up operation. Propagation through the injection system incurs notable losses from bending magnets, beam choppers along the way and the transition from 2856MHz to 500MHz RF frequency at the injection point from the Linac-to-Booster transfer line (LTB) to the booster. The present system only monitors the efficiency of the booster to storage ring injection with two parametric current transformers (PCTs). In this experiment, the transmission efficiencies between four key points in the Linac and LTB were measured using fast current transformers (FCTs) along with the present system, which gives an overview of the total transmission efficiency from a very close point of the electron gun to the storage ring. The FCT signals were corrected for the loss attributed to the cable attenuation by employing Fast Fourier analysis and determining the cables’ S21-parameter. The charge calculation was improved by 3.3 − 7.5% with the corrected signals and the overall efficiency was found to be 16% ± 1% for top-up injection mode.
