Les membres des familles kabyles immigrées en France et au Canada sont porteurs d'une idéologie de la parenté et des normes sociales héritées de leur pays d'origine. La culture patriarcale, la cohésion familiale et l'endogamie sont les repères symboliques structurant Ego dans sa filiation. Le contact avec des formes familiales occidentales privilègiant, en théorie, des structures plus réduites aurait pu cependant se révèler un obstacle à la transmission d'une conception globalisante du lien de filiation. Or, la famille n'est pas une structure figée dans le temps ou dans l'espace, ses membres et ses structures évoluent et s'adaptent au contexte socio-économique. Ainsi le décryptage des structures familiales kabyles de France révèle un univers de parenté complexe et tensionnel organisé en niveaux concentriques : de la "vraie famille", structure nucléaire, à la famille étendue communautaire, structure large héritée du patrilignage d'origine. La faculté d'adaptation des Kabyles de France n'est cependant pas reconnue par leurs homologues canadiens. L'absence de communauté constituée au Québec démontre la difficulté de ces derniers à accepter leur statut immigré. Leur projet migratoire construit pour partie en opposition avec leurs homologues français fournit également les éléments d'une réalité socio-familiale où les individus sont tiraillés entre ce qu'ils nomment le "phénomène Beur", érigé en contre-exemple, et une idéologie de la famille québécoise opposée à la leur. C'est dans cet entre-deux qu'ils souhaitent ériger pour leurs enfants une culture kabylo-canadienne sans soupçonner que le "phénomène Beur" cache une réalité culturelle et familiale proche de leur idéal.
