Fatigue of tubular bridge joints using welded or cast steel node solutions

Abstract
In the design of recently constructed steel-concrete composite bridges using hollow section trusses for the main load carrying structure, the fatigue verification of the tubular truss joints was a main issue. New research done on the fatigue behaviour of such joints has focused on circular hollow section (CHS) K-joints, both directly welded and cast steel nodes, with low chord diameter-to-thickness ratios—a geometric characteristic typical to tubular bridge trusses. This paper presents the main results of these studies, including comparisons between welded and cast steel solutions. The key issues and recommendations for the design and fabrication of both types of nodes are discussed. In the case of welded CHS K-joints, the determination of the stress concentration factors (SCF) has been synthesized in the form of a modified stress concentration factor, referred to as SCF<sub>total</sub>. Within the SCF<sub>total</sub> concept, notions of load combination and stress partitioning in brace and chord members are used, which facilitates the comparison between the fatigue behaviour of different joints and critical fatigue locations in the joint. The importance of a balanced design between the various potential crack initiation sites in a cast steel node is discussed. A simplified procedure to determine the initial allowable defect sizes for a typical steel-concrete composite bridge is described.
