Este trabajo realiza un análisis de las estructuras espaciales de superficie esférica indagando en las cúpulas geodésicas. Para ello se estudia el origen y los acontecimientos más importantes relacionados con esta estructura, analizando la figura de Richard Buckminster Fuller arquitecto estadounidense inventor de la cúpula geodésica. La geometría de estas cúpulas viene dada por la inscripción de uno de los cinco sólidos platónicos en la superficie de una esfera, la cual crea los denominados arcos de círculo mayor que servirán de referencia para las líneas geodésicas que conforman la estructura de la cúpula. Según la orientación de dichas líneas podemos obtener tres clases de cúpulas diferentes. Se realiza un análisis del comportamiento estructural de la cúpula geodésica frente a las acciones gravitatorias, de viento y sísmicas. Y se explican los diferentes sistemas utilizados para su construcción indicando los elementos que componen cada uno de ellos y los materiales que pueden ser utilizados. Por último se estudian tres edificios singulares de este tipo de estructuras: la Biosfera de Montreal, el Eden Project y la cúpula del Museo Dalí. Como conclusión del trabajo se propone el diseño de una cúpula geodésica de clase dos y frecuencia cuatro obtenida a partir de un icosaedro y construida utilizando paneles sándwich como único elemento tanto estructural como de cerramiento, que pueda ser utilizada como refugio de emergencia.
