Abstract
The cyclonic spreading of surface waters in the subpolar North Atlantic coupled with strong air-sea heat fluxes create deep mixed layers which are the formation sites of Subpolar Mode Water (SPMW). The densest SPMW is found in the Labrador Sea, while other dense types also have been reported for the Irminger Sea. Circulation patterns suggest a pathway of SPMW from the Labrador Sea into the Irminger Sea that may help preconditioning dense water formation there. The Subpolar Mode Waters are subject to interannual and decadal variability. They vary due to mixing as well as due to variability in the formation. In this study the characteristics of SPMW in the western Subpolar North Atlantic are investigated from ship based hydrographic and oxygen data surveyed in late spring/summer between 2016 and 2022. SPMW is tracked via its low stratification along sections in the Labrador and Irminger Sea in the attempt to link the modes to the formation year as well as describing mixing processes involved to realize the evolution of the mode. It is found that the years following the strong convection event of winter 2014/2015 sustain generally strong wintertime convection. In 2016 deep convection is suspected to have taken place in the Irminger Sea and south of Cape Farewell. After 2018 the deep mixed layer formation lessens.
