Este estudio cualitativo busca investigar la pérdida y el mantenimiento de la lengua materna en \nfamilias hispanas radicadas en Vancouver, Canadá. El estudio se enfoca en las experiencias vividas \npor padres de familia que tienen hijos que están desarrollándose de manera bilingüe (español e \ninglés) así como padres con hijos que están creciendo monolingües (solo inglés). La estrategia \nprimaria de recolección de datos utilizada fue la entrevista semi-estructurada. Los resultados del \nestudio indican que la identidad cultural original de las familias (o sea, la hispana) se vuelve crucial \npara lograr el desarrollo y mantenimiento de la lengua materna en contextos donde prevalece \notra lengua dominante (en este caso, el inglés). No obstante, los presentes resultados no coinciden \ncon al menos un estudio anterior cuyo análisis señala que una comunidad etnolingüística limitada \n(como es la hispana en Canadá) y el aporte lingüístico de un solo padre no son suficientes para \npreservar la lengua materna en la familia. En el presente estudio, los niños bilingües (aquellos que \nmantuvieron la lengua materna) recibieron aporte lingüístico de un padre de familia solamente. \nAdemás, el contacto lingüístico que tuvieron estos niños con el español fuera del hogar fue muy \nlimitado. Los datos exponen que el tipo de motivación que proporcionan los padres a sus hijos \npara que hablen el español puede tener efectos adversos o favorecedores para el mantenimiento \nde la lengua materna. Por tal motivo, se recomienda a los padres comprometidos con la lengua \nmaterna que sepan promover actitudes positivas en sus hijos y que atiendan el tema de la lengua \nmaterna con ecuanimidad y harmonía.
