Si l’apprentissage du temps constitue compte bien parmi les buts explicitement assignés à l’éveil historique au préscolaire et au premier cycle du primaire, progressivement au fil de la scolarité primaire et secondaire, il tend à se faire moins explicite voire absent. Il en est ainsi au Québec et, sous réserve d’inventaire, on peut faire l’hypothèse qu’il en est de même, certes avec des nuances, dans de nombreux systèmes éducatifs. Et pourtant, au Québec, en fin de 4e secondaire, plusieurs opérations intellectuelles évaluées dans l’épreuve ministérielle relèvent du temps. Celui-ci semble ainsi constituer un objet d’enseignement de plus en plus implicite au fil de la scolarité obligatoire. \nPar ailleurs, dans la littérature didactique, l’objet d’enseignement-apprentissage qu’est le temps est relativement peu défini et peu arrimé aux concepts de méthode, perspective, littératie, pensée ou conscience historique. \nLa définition du temps historien comme une catégorie intellectuelle inhérente à la perspective historienne permet de la situer par rapport à ces concepts majeurs de la didactique de l’histoire. Elle ouvre également à une déclinaison opérationnelle qui permet à la fois d’enseigner cet objet et de l’évaluer. \nCette définition trouve un triple fondement dans l’historiographie, la didactique de l’histoire et les travaux en épistémologie de l’histoire.
