An Overview on Rigid Pavement Specifications in Developed Countries

Abstract
As any engineering structure, for the highway pavement design and construction a series of technical, economic and environmental factors is considered before the material selection. The technical factors involve physical, chemical, and mechanical features, the ease of construction work, construction duration, durability requirements and the safety and comfort of the selected materials under service and environmental conditions. On the other side, the initial cost and the life cycle cost are among the economic factors. In addition, environmental factors such as sustainability, socioeconomic factors and the impact on national economy should also be considered. Rigid (concrete) pavements in highway applications are preferred for high traffic volume and heavy repetitive loads in developed countries such as the USA, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Canada. Although there are relatively few countries that benefit from concrete road technology, some significant differences in the road specifications can be observed. In this study, rigid pavement specifications were investigated in four states of America (Florida, Wisconsin, Washington, Nevada) which those states indicate different climatic conditions in the USA, Canada, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. The prominent differences were compared under five main topics; i) pavement design (design methodology, concrete pavement types, design thickness, transverse joint spacing and design life), ii) base and subbase design, iii) dowel bar selection iv) the surface texturing v) concrete mixture design (allowed cement types, min. cement amount, max water/cement ratio, 28-day compressive strength).
