Abstract
Alla prima metà dell’Ottocento, durante il Principato dei Baciocchi, con Elisa, iniziò per Bagni di Lucca un rapido processo di sviluppo e di trasformazione che, nel corso dei primi decenni del secolo, avrebbe portato a farne non solo un luogo quasi esclusivamente di cura, ma anche centro internazionale di soggiorno. Dopo la sconfitta napoleonica e grazie al Congresso di Vienna, lo Stato di Lucca fu assegnato in via provvisoria a Maria Luisa di Borbone. Anche Maria Luisa, come Elisa, scelse come luogo di villeggiatura per i mesi estivi Bagni di Lucca e si prodigò per lo sviluppo, così che aumentò la sua fama come luogo di soggiorno elegante. Carlo Lodovico, subentrato alla madre nel 1824, volle dedicare a Bagni di Lucca particolari cure, in particolare concesse alla comunità inglese la realizzazione della chiesa e del cimitero anglicano. Inoltre, è grazie al Duca che fu costruito il primo casino di Europa nella cittadina termale. Le viaggiatrici e poetesse, in particolar modo: Elisabeth Stisted, Elisabeth Barret, Rose Cleveland, Evangeline Whipple , Ouida, hanno influenzato notevolmente lo sviluppo di Bagni di Lucca grazie alle loro opere di carità e ai loro manoscritti.
