Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The aim of this work is to improve the \nknowledge of the mollusc fauna of Terra Nova Bay \n(Ross Sea), on the basis of more than 100 stations \nsampled from 25 to 1100 m depth, during Italian Ant- \narctic Expeditions (austral summers 1987/1988, 1989/ \n1990, 1993/1994, 1994/1995, 1995/1996 and 1997/1998). \nIn shallow waters, gastropod fauna is represented by 31 \nspecies, among which Neobuccinum eatoni, Onoba gelida, \nPowellisetia deserta, Philine cf. apertissima and Austro- \ndoris kerguelenensis are the most abundant, while among \nbivalves (25 species) the commonest species are Adam- \nussium colbecki, Yoldia eightsi, Laternula elliptica and \n``Montacuta'' nimrodiana. At present, most of the Ant- \narctic mollusc species are known as having circumant- \narctic distribution and are considered eurybathic. \nMoreover, in general, only scarce data are available on \ntheir substrate preferences, because of their occurrence \nin scattered sampling stations with di€erent sediment \nfeatures. In the present study carried out at Terra Nova \nBay, based on a relatively high number of stations, a \nclear zonation of mollusc assemblages is shown, ac- \ncording to depth and sediment features. While gastro- \npods characterise the superRcial algal belts dominated \nby the red algae Iridaea cordata and Phyllophora \nantarctica, bivalve distribution is wider. Adamussium \ncolbecki is the dominant species in the upper 100 m, \nboth on soft and hard bottoms, if the slope is suitable \n(density up to 40 }60 ind./m2). On coarse sands, this \nspecies is frequently accompanied by L. elliptica (density \n<20 ind./m2), while Y. eightsi characterises organic- \nenriched bottoms (density 70 }80 ind./m2). Below 200 m \ndepth Adacnarca nitens, Limatula hodgsoni, ``Monta- \ncuta'' nimrodiana and Mysella gibbosa are commonly \nfound on relatively coarse sediments, while Thyasira \ndearborni and Yoldiella ecaudata prefer muddy bottoms. \nIn order to identify bivalve assemblages, multivariate \nanalyses were applied to stations grouped into depth \nranges, sediment features and location. While shallow \nbathymetric ranges (25 }200 m) are clearly deRned, \ndeeper clusters of stations are more in Puenced by the \nhigh degree of eurybathy of most of the species and by \nthe scattered distribution of the sediment particle sizes.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
