Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This work aims to show a translation proposal and a linguistic and translational comment of the comic Mile End by the Quebecois author Michel Hellman. The main goal is to present a proposal that has to be faithful to the will of the author of the original text but at the same time it has to get close to the reader of the target language. The analysed text, as we’ve already said, belongs to a particular genre, that is the one of comic book, so the translation process is a little bit more complicated because there are a lot of iconic and verbal aspects associated to the text to be analysed. In addition, the language used in the book is a specific French variety, particularly Quebecois French, also said “laurentienne”. Therefore, another obstacle is the one of decoding the typical expressions of Quebec French, leading them back to the standard French and rendering them into the translation language, that is Italian. The text is composed by three different parts, divided into chapters and paragraphs. Each section deals with a specific aspect, more theoretical (in the first one) or more practical (in the third one), as well as presenting the translation itself (in the second one). Consequently, the first chapter consists of a set of information that any reader, far from the comic world, has to have in order to understand the following chapters. Here, you can find a panoramic about the history of the comic genre on an international level, his main features, the properties which distinguish it from the other genres and the more frequent difficulties when we read it or translate it. Moreover, a section is dedicated to the development of the comic in Québec. There is also one part devoted to the analysis of the similarities and differences between comics and other forms of art, such as cinema, while another section has been kept for the explication of the main difficulties in translating the genre. Finally, always in the same chapter, an introduction to the author and his tale is presented. In the second chapter, we have the translation proposal into Italian with the French original parallel text. Due to the particular genre, translation will appear as a real proposal of editorial publication, inside the balloons and with the entire iconic system, as in the original text. The translator’s notes have been specifically minimised because, then, all the aspects have been considered in the analysis chapter. In this way, the reading of the translated text will be easier and more fluent. Finally, in the third chapter, a translation analysis is proposed. Here, all the more complex passages have been faced. The chapter is divided into several paragraphs, each of which deals with a specific translation difficulty, such as realia, symbols, English terms, onomatopoeia and more. To conclude, this work introduces a lot of food for thought and it is a good starting point for those who want to enter into the comic world or into the Quebecois French world. Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
