L’iode hypervalent est un oxydant puissant et sélectif beaucoup utilisé en synthèse organique pour une multitude de transformations. La déaromatisation des phénols fait partie de ces réactions que l’iode hypervalent rend maintenant possible de manière plus verte et sans métaux couteux et toxiques. Les études mécanistiques et cinétiques de cette réaction, bien qu’elle soit bien documentée dans la littérature, sont cependant sous représentées. En effet, plusieurs voies mécanistiques sont proposées pour expliquer l’inversion de polarité du phénol et certains postulent un cation phénoxénium libre. L’existence même de ce cryptide moléculaire est encore incertaine malgré les nombreuses discussions à son sujet. Dans ce travail de recherche, un système et une méthode par blocage de flux furent développés pour étudier la cinétique de formation d’intermédiaires former par des réactions thermiques rapides (< 60 secondes). De plus, nous avons développé une méthode de calcul permettant de prédire des énergies d’activation plus précises pour les transfert d’électron unique. En utilisant ces deux nouvelles méthodes, l’énergie d’activation théorique (12.6 kcal/mol) et expérimentales (13.2 ± 0.6 kcal/mol) du phénoxénium formé par l’oxydation par l’iode hypervalent furent déterminés et concorde bien. La faible enthalpie d’activation (2.91 ± 0.2 kcal/mol) et l’entropie d’activation négative (-34.2 ± 2.0 cal/mol*K) démontrent que le mécanisme actif créée un grand changement dans la sphère de solvatation mais un faible changement dans les liaisons intramoléculaires lors de l’état de transition, ce qui est cohérent avec un mécanisme de transfert d’électron. \n_____________________________________________________________________________ \nMOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : Iode hypervalent, phénol, déaromatisation de phénol, blocage de flux, transfert d’électron
