Ce mémoire porte sur les interprétations et les représentations de la notion de fonction chez les étudiants au baccalauréat en enseignement secondaire des mathématiques à l'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). Le but est de connaître les représentations de la fonction qu'ils privilégient pour accomplir plusieurs tâches : définir une fonction, en identifier une représentation, associer deux représentations, et transformer une représentation, soit par traitement, soit par conversion, deux activités cognitives mentionnées par Duval (1995). En plus du point précédent, un intérêt particulier est accordé à la verbalisation de certaines interprétations de la fonction dans les réponses des participants. Enfin, les questions de recherche touchent les différences entre les futurs maîtres en début et en fin de formation. Un questionnaire a été administré à 100 participants : 46 étudiants de 1ère année, 25 étudiants de mi-parcours et 29 finissants. Il ressort que ces participants font appel à une variété de représentations de la fonction selon la tâche à accomplir, principalement les représentations verbales et graphiques. Par ailleurs, de nombreux participants de notre étude, particulièrement les finissants, définissent la fonction par une interprétation, le plus souvent une relation de dépendance, laquelle serait à privilégier selon Nicholas (1966). Ils se distinguent ainsi des participants de plusieurs études antérieures. Toutefois, ils articulent rarement plusieurs représentations de la fonction pour résoudre un même problème, ce qui définit pourtant un haut niveau de compréhension de la fonction selon Hitt et al. (2001).
