O envelhecimento é um fenómeno que se tem evidenciado nas sociedades atuais, tornando-se essencial perceber as consequências que esta fase de vida pode trazer ao indivíduo e à sua identidade e posteriormente, identificar estratégias e intervenções que permitam promover uma melhor qualidade de vida e sentido de coerência do Self aos adultos mais velhos. Por seu turno, também se torna pertinente desenvolver estudos sobre Memórias Autobiográficas devido ao interesse nesta área ser relativamente recente em Portugal e porque estas são essenciais na prática clínica para compreendermos o indivíduo. O objetivo da presente investigação foi estudar as Memórias Autobiográficas em adultos mais velhos (≥ 65 anos) nomeadamente, a valência emocional e a especificidade das memórias evocadas. A amostra do estudo foi constituída por 60 adultos mais velhos (≥ 65 anos), dos quais 40 são do sexo feminino e 20 são do sexo masculino. Aplicou-se o seguinte protocolo de investigação: a Tarefa de Memórias Autobiográficas, a Escala Geriátrica da Depressão (GDS), o Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), a Escala de Desejabilidade Social de 20 Itens (EDS-20), a Escala de Avaliação Emocional (EAS), o Inventário de Sintomas Psicopatológicos (BSI) e por último, o Inventário de Ansiedade Estado e Traço (STAI-Y). Este estudo permite concluir que, em adultos mais velhos: a evocação de Memórias Autobiográficas específicas é superior à evocação de Memórias Autobiográficas gerais; A evocação de memórias específicas é superior em palavras-estímulo de valência emocional negativa do que em palavras-estímulo de valência emocional positiva; A evocação de Memórias Autobiográficas de valência emocional (positiva e negativa) é superior comparativamente a memórias neutras; Não há diferenças significativas entre os eventos de valência emocional positiva e os eventos de valência emocional negativa evocados e não há diferenças significativas entre os tempos de latência em palavras-estímulo de valência emocional positiva e de valência emocional negativa.
