Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The prose works of Nino Haratischwili, a Georgian writer and playwright born in Tbilisi in 1983 and now living in Germany, contain autobiographical elements and motifs. In her monumental novels, reminiscent of the family sagas of the realist era, the author depicts the fate of Georgia and the Georgian nation from the late 19 th century to recent times. The historical events, dating back to Tsarist Russia, show, on the one hand, the disintegration of the state, the burial of hopes of regaining independence and the dramatic events of the totalitarian period, the communist Soviet Union, but on the other hand, depict the complex situation that occurred in the 1990s, the internal conflicts and their impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. The aim of this article is to present the vision of the Georgian state and nation contained in the prose of the Georgian-German author. The following text analyses the Haratischwili's novels, as well as selected interviews conducted with her and the literature on Georgia's geopolitical situation. In conclusion, it was found that the picture presented by the writer is complex. It depicts both difficult moments for the nation and those that inspire hope for a better future.
