Abstract
La survie des hardes de caribous forestiers de Val-d’Or, de Charlevoix de même que la harde appartenant à l’écotype montagnard qui occupe les hauts plateaux du parc national de la Gaspésie est sérieusement compromise. L’extinction de ces populations de cervidés – des héritiers en ligne directe de réfugiés climatiques de la dernière ère glaciaire ayant maintes fois fait preuve d’une remarquable capacité à s’adapter et à survivre dans monde hostile et en perpétuel changement – signifierait la regrettable disparition, à jamais, d’une manière singulière d’exister, de vivre et d’animer nos quelques arpents de neige (une infortune dont les québécois se tout particulièrement en mesure d’acquérir une juste compréhension). \n \nBien que le titre de cet ouvrage et l’illustration de couverture puissent suggérer que cet essai soit une sorte de traité sur l’histoire de la grandeur et de la décadence des populations de caribou forestier, la situation critique dans laquelle se trouvent les populations de caribous forestiers du Québec sert plutôt de prétexte pour ouvrir une réflexion beaucoup plus large sur les raisons de l’échec de nos stratégies de protection des espèces vulnérables, menacées ou en voie de disparition.
