A Temporal Study of Salmonella enterica Serovars in Poultry Breeder Flocks and Hatcheries in Ontario from 2009 to 2018

Abstract
This thesis investigates the prevalence, seasonal patterns, temporal trends, and clustering of Salmonella enterica in Ontario’s hatcheries and breeder flocks between 2009 and 2018 using data obtained through the Ontario Hatchery and Supply Flock Program. The prevalence of Salmonella in hatcheries and breeder flocks varied by year and season. Temporal trends varied by poultry commodity. Decreasing trends were observed in broiler and turkey hatcheries as well as within broiler- and layer-breeders. Increasing prevalence was detected in waterfowl and game bird hatcheries as well as among turkey-breeders. Salmonella enterica ser. Enteritidis was isolated from waterfowl, broiler, and gamebird hatcheries as well as in all breeder flocks examined (broiler-, layer-, and turkey-breeders). Temporal clusters of S. enterica serovars Kentucky, Heidelberg, Newport, and Orion in Ontario’s breeder flocks were temporally linked to clusters in their corresponding hatcheries. Variance components indicate that control measures should be directed at the hatchery and breeder flock levels.
