Sinds de komst van Web 2.0 maken reizigers steeds meer gebruik van electronic word of mouth om hun positieve en negatieve ervaringen met anderen te delen. Door online media kunnen klachten snel over het internet worden verspreid, waardoor een groot publiek kan worden bereikt. Een klacht kan problematisch zijn voor een bedrijf wat bedrijven ertoe aanzet webcare toe te passen. Webcare kan de negatieve invloed van online klachten beperken of tot een positief einde laten komen. Hierbij kunnen verschillende crisiscommunicatie en human presencestrategieën worden toegepast. In dit onderzoek is onderzocht hoe de reacties op klachten van Belgische en Canadese hotels van elkaar verschillen, omdat Hofstede (1984) aangeeft dat de landen erg van elkaar verschillen qua culturele dimensies power-distance, uncertainty avoidance en long term orientation. Uit de resultaten is gebleken dat Belgische en Canadese hotels niet veel van elkaar verschillen wat betreft human presence. Wel is gebleken dat Belgische hotels vaker een aanvallende houding naar hun gasten aannemen en de klachten van hun klanten minimaliseren, terwijl de Canadese hotels sneller geneigd zijn hun excuses aan te bieden en aangeven de gast nog een keer te willen verwelkomen.
