Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The goal of this research project was to evaluate the hydrological and environmental performance of a porous asphalt as a stormwater management practice for a municipal parking lot. More specifically, a two-year experimental monitoring campaign was carried out on two areas of the parking lot, the first built using a conventional method (conventional pavement) and the second equipped with a porous asphalt developed by the Ministère des Transports du Québec combined with a clean stone reservoir. The methodology consisted of measuring the infiltration rate of the porous asphalt at three points during different seasons of the year, collecting precipitation data using an on-site rain gauge located at the experimental site, monitoring flow rates for a period of 24 months at a manhole where runoff from the two areas was routed and collecting water samples during rainfall events, The data was then used to model the hydrological and hydraulic behavior of the porous asphalt. The tests demonstrated a high infiltration capacity of the porous asphalt, nevertheless affected by a clogging effect, due to the use of abrasives in winter. The flow rate analysis revealed a decrease in runoff volume ranging from 68% to 100% and a reduction in peak flow rates from 91% to 100%, depending on the rainfall event. On a seasonal scale, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2014, 2015, and 2017, between May and October, the reduction in volumes reached 80%. For a total precipitation height of less than 21 mm, with a return period of less than 2 years, no runoff was observed for the porous asphalt zone. The analysis of the sampled runoff water showed an improvement in the water quality leaving the reservoir under the porous pavement compared to that of the conventional asphalt. The decrease in the concentration of different contaminants analyzed reached 75%, 93%, 98%, 99%, 58%, 40%, 54%, respectively, for suspended solids, hydrocarbons, zinc, copper, aluminum, phosphorous and nitrogen.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
