Abstract
Í augum ungmenna er framhaldsskólinn og lífið í kringum hann einn mikilvægasti þáttur í lífi þeirra. Á síðasta ári þeirra í grunnskóla eru framhaldsskólar kynntir fyrir þeim og þau eru hvött til þess að hafa opinn huga fyrir öllum skólum. Margir nemendur eru hins vegar löngu búnir að ákveða hvaða framhaldsskóli verður fyrir valinu en aðrir eru ekki eins vissir. Á þessum tíma getur það komið í ljós að þó að valið hafi verið löngu ákveðið þá er það mögulega ekki í boði. Tilgangur ritgerðarinnar er að rannsaka hvernig félagslegur bakgrunnur hvers nemenda tekur þátt í framhaldsskóla vali og hvernig hann getur haft áhrif á skólagönguna. Niðurstöður sýna að þó að framhaldsskólavalið eigi að vera frjálst og allir eiga að fá sömu tækifæri þá er það ekki staðan. Það er skipting innan skólakerfisins og eins og hefur komið fram í eldri rannsóknum þá sést hjá þeim sem að koma frá veikari bakgrunni.
