Les ciutats s'estan expandint a nivell mundial a escales i ritmes accelerats, portant conseqüències socials i ambientals negatives. Per a controlar, orientar i mitigar el creixement urbà expansiu, els Estats han establert estratègies i polítiques des de la planificació urbana i la regulació del sòl. En aquest desafiament global, prenem com a cas d'estudi una metròpolis llatinoamericana, la Regió Metropolitana de Santiago de Xile entre 1997 i 2013, i ens preguntem: Quins són els patrons espacials i temporals de creixement urbà expansiu de la Regió? Quin rol ha jugat el Pla Regulador Metropolità de Santiago per a orientar aquesta expansió? Quins altres factors incideixen en el procés d'expansió identificada? La recerca inicia amb les preguntes plantejades, tenint com a objectiu analitzar els patrons espacials de l'expansió urbana de la Regió Metropolitana de Santiago i el paper del Pla Regulador Metropolità de Santiago en el creixement urbà expansiu, entre 1997 i 2013. Per a l'anterior, la hipòtesi planteja que en un context d'expansió urbana, el Pla Regulador Metropolità de Santiago ha estat ineficaç per a controlar i frenar el creixement urbà expansiu en el període d'analitzat (1997-2013). Per a això, la recerca utilitza un enfocament multimetodològic i multiescalar, per a respondre a les preguntes plantejades des de diferents enfocaments. D'aquesta manera, la tesi doctoral se sosté en tres casos d'estudis, en forma d'articles científics publicats en revistes internacionals indexades. Els resultats plantegen línies de recerca futura, principalment, amb la intenció de contribuir al desafiament global de l'expansió urbana accelerada i les seves conseqüències negatives. I d'altra banda, enrobustir a la literatura de la planificació i els estudis urbans des de l'anàlisi empírica d'una ciutat del sud global.
