Abstract
The Detroit Red Wings will look to build on back-to-back victories after a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers in their last outing. Franz Nielsen opened the scoring for Detroit late in the 1st and Andreas Athanasiou doubled the lead with the lone goal of the 2nd period, taking a 2-0 lead into the 3rd period. The Rangers pulled a goal back with :10 to go to make things interesting, but it was too little too late as Detroit held on for the victory. Jimmy Howard got the win to improve to 19-20-5 this season, stopping 41 of 43 shots faced in the winning effort. The St. Louis Blues will look to build some steam after putting out a 7-2 thumping of the Edmonton Oilers in their last outing. Jaden Schwartz opened the scoring for St. Louis with the lone goal of the opening period. Alex Pietrangelo doubled the lead just :27 into the 2nd before Schwartz scored his 2nd of the game and David Perron made it 4-0 just 1:32 apart. Edmonton scored a pair of late goals to cut the deficit in half heading into the 3rd but Perron would score his 2nd of the game, Patrick Maroon would get on the scoresheet and Schwartz would complete his hat trick as the Blues piled on in the 3rd. Jordan Binnington picked up the win between the pipes to improve to 18-4-1 after stopping 15 of 17 shots faced in the winning effort. Detroit is 16-36 in their last 52 games overall and 15-37 in their last 52 road games while the under is 5-2 in their last 7 games as an underdog. St. Louis is 8-2 in their last 10 home games and 17-8 in their last 25 games overall while the under is 5-1 in their last 6 games as a home favorite. Detroit is 5-1 in the last 6 meetings between these two teams in St. Louis. The plus money is worth a look considering that the road team has won 11 of the last 14 meetings between the two sides and that Detroit has had a lot of success on the road against the Blues. However, St. Louis is the only team here with something to play for as Detroit has been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, and every win actually hurts Detroit’s draft positioning. The Blues are looking to pick up steam down the stretch, so I’ll side with St. Louis here and to negate some of the juice, I’ll lay a goal with the Blues here.
