Íþróttasálfræði hefur á seinni árum verið að ryðja sér til rúms og koma meira í umræðuna og hefur sennilega aldrei verið vinsælli. En hvað þarf til að ná langt í íþróttum? Er nóg að hafa einungis líkamlega hæfileika eða þarf hugurinn líka að vera í lagi? Í þessari rannsókn er gerð grein fyrir þeim þáttum sem rannsóknir hafa sýnt að hafi áhrif á árangur í íþróttum. Rannsóknarspurningarnar voru: Hver er upplifun vaxtarræktarmanna á hugrænni færni í íþrótt sinni? Og einnig: Skipta hugrænir þættir meira máli en líkamlegir til árangurs? Rannsóknin hafði þann tilgang að dýpka og auka skilning á fyrirbærinu. Eigindleg viðtöl voru tekin við þrjá vaxtarræktarmenn í apríl 2013. Þátttakendur voru á aldrinum 23-40 ára. Bæði viðtölin og eftirvinnslan voru unnin eftir aðferðum Vancouver-skólans í fyrirbærafræði. Meginþemun sem komu fram voru: mikilvægi andlegu hliðarinnar, líkamsímynd og sjálfstraust, mikilvægi skynmynda, álag og streita. Niðurstöður sýndu að þátttakendur töldu hugræna þætti mjög mikilvæga og þeir þyrftu að vera til staðar til að ná langt. Bæði andlegir og líkamlegir þættir spila mikilvæg hlutverk í árangri í íþróttum. Ljóst er að enginn verður góður íþróttamaður með því að þjálfa einungis hugræna færni og sleppa líkamlegu þáttunum. Sá sem vill ná langt ætti að leggja stund á hugræna þætti samhliða þeim líkamlegu.
