En este texto daremos cuenta en forma somera de las grandes vertientes de la reflexión y discusión sobre la Democracia. En principio podemos agruparlas en dos campos: aquellas que piensan que el consenso es el fundamento y el objetivo de la democracia (Habermas, Galli, Offe); y las que consideran que la política democrática descansa en el reconocimiento de un antagonismo legítimo que implica el desacuerdo (Rancière) el disenso, el conflicto (Lefort) o el agonismo (Mouffe). Desde los años 80 del siglo veinte existe una amplia bibliografía en las ciencias políticas y sociológicas que plantea o analiza las crisis de las democracias occidentales. Una de las más conocidas en nuestro país en esa década, es el libro del destacado filósofo político y jurídico italiano Norberto Bobbio “Las promesas incumplidas de la democracia”. Hoy podemos citar otras más recientes, como las de Dahl, Warren, Rosanvallon , Galli, incluso hay quienes hablan sobre el fin de la democracia como Guehénno , Crouch Laval y Dardot ; de la posdemocracia entendida ésta como la transformación interna del poder económico en político, la creación para-estatal de políticas públicas por empresas trasnacionales.
