Mon intention n'est pas de faire ce soir la biographie d'un homme dont la carrire scientifique fut aussi longue, aussi remplie, aussi brillante que celle de Hunt.Mais on voudra bien me permettre quelques mots l'adresse d*un savant qui fut presqu'un collgue l'Universit Laval, et dont l'amiti personnelle m'a toujours t particulirement prcieuse.Il n'y a aucune exagration dire que Hunt a occup dans la science l'une des premires places.Sa carrire scientifique, commence et termine aux Etats-Unis, s'est coule en grande partie au Canada, de faon qu'il fut bien l'un des ntres.A peine g de soixante-six ans, le Dr Hunt a t emport par une maladie qui ne pardonne pas : l'hypertrophie du coeur.Depuis plusieurs annes dj, on prvoyait ce triste dnouement, et cependant, la nouvelle de la mort du savant canadien a pniblement affect les nombreux amis qu'il comptait en Europe et en Amrique.L'histoire de sa vie se rsume en des travaux scientifiques de premier ordre, qu'il a publis diverses reprises, depuis 1845.Dans tous ses ouvrages, on est sr de rencontrer le rsultat de recherches conscien- cieuses et suivies, une mthode toujours rigoureuse et un culte tout particulier pour l'exactitude des observations et des expriences.Parmi les savants de notre temps, Hunt tait au premier rang, et son nom tait cit ct des grandes autorits amricaines et europennes.
