Délibération au sujet du problèmeDe nombreux participants ont indiqué que les besoins non comblés dans les soins de santé primaires portent maintenant moins sur le nombre de fournisseurs de soins de santé primaires (et en particulier de médecins) et davantage sur : 1) des populations en particulier qui sont mal desservies dans les soins de santé primaires; et 2) l'accès aux soins de santé primaires en temps opportun pour beaucoup de Canadiens.Les participants ont soutenu que pour préconiser que les infirmières praticiennes fassent partie de la solution afin de répondre à ces besoins non comblés, il faut déterminer à quel point les infirmières praticiennes peuvent s'adapter à la refonte en cours du système et auprès de quelles populations (et ensuite dans quels milieux) faut-il les affecter.Ceci est particulièrement important en période de restrictions budgétaires et après une période prolongée d'injection de fonds dans les soins de santé primaires.Le McMaster Health Forum a convié les parties prenantes à un dialogue portant sur l'intégration des infirmières praticiennes dans les milieux de soins de santé primaires au Canada.Ce dialogue a été organisé avec le soutien de la Fondation canadienne de la recherche sur les services de santé, des Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada, de l'Association des infirmières et infirmiers du Canada et de Santé Canada.Le dialogue a réuni des participants de partout au Canada incluant : cinq décideurs, quatre gestionnaires, onze professionnels de la santé, quatre chercheurs et une autre partie prenante.Ces participants ont été invités à examiner le problème, les éléments d'une approche pour aborder le problème et les implications liées à la mise en œuvre des ces éléments.
