Maine's wild blueberry crop was better than expected this year despite a drought that has hit some sectors of New England agriculture hard, and consumers could benefit from the heavy supply. Maine's wild blueberry crop flourished, despite a drought taking a toll on some of New England's agriculture......and consumers could benefit from the heavy supply.Maine's by far the largest wild blueberry-producing state in the U.S....and the state's Wild Blueberry Commission says it'll most likely hit its 5-year average of about 93-million pounds this summer.Consumers will be happy because the large supply could bring down prices across the country, and could even keep them that way past the current season...Something growers and processors DON'T want to happen.The wild blueberry industry's struggled because of the oversupply in berries as well as the competition from the Atlantic Canadian provinces, which also produce wild blueberries.Making the situation even harder -- Canada's dollar's been weaker AND its blueberry prices lower than in the U.S. recently.The federal government's even stepped in, spending about 13-million-dollars to buy up some of this year's surplus crop.The Wild Blueberry Commission says irrigation improvements, and a strong year for pollination boosted Maine's crop this year -- even with the drought.And adds that another big year of supply would continue the oversupply issues it's currently facing.
