Depuis le lancement du plan d'action numérique en éducation en 2018, une variété d'initiatives et de projets pilotes exploitant le numérique à divers ordres d'enseignement ont été lancés. Parmi ceux-ci se trouvent des projets de formation à distance pour les élèves de la fin du secondaire soutenus par des cours créés par les services nationaux du RÉCIT. Pendant trois ans, notre équipe de recherche a suivi la progression d'élèves et d'enseignants impliqués dans le cours d'Histoire du Québec et du Canada issu de cette initiative en ayant comme intention de caractériser et d'analyser les facteurs qui favorisaient ou qui entravaient l'engagement des élèves. Nos résultats, fondés sur le témoignage des élèves et les pratiques déclarées des enseignants, mettent en évidence des enjeux à considérer pour un éventuel déploiement de la formation à distance auprès des élèves du secondaire. En outre, la majorité des élèves semble apprécier l'autonomie que leur accorde ce format d'enseignement, mais une minorité s'y trouve fragilisée et isolée. De leur côté, les enseignants ont initialement éprouvé des difficultés à adapter leurs pratiques, notamment sur le plan des dimensions motivationnelle et socioaffective de l'enseignement.
