De nos jours, Internet occupe une place prépondérante dans nos sociétés occidentales et vient y redéfinir différentes sphères : économique, professionnelle, relationnelle et plus encore (Castells, 2001 ; Le Mentec, 2016). Depuis sa généralisation, plusieurs chercheurs se sont intéressés à l'impact de cette technologie dans le monde social, notamment sur l'immigration et les enjeux qui y sont reliés. L'immigration est un phénomène d'actualité particulièrement prégnant, et les pays d'accueil doivent continuellement se préoccuper de l'intégration de leurs immigrants. Dans le cadre de ce mémoire, nous nous sommes intéressée au rôle d'Internet dans l'intégration sociale des personnes immigrantes à Calgary (Alberta), Canada. L'objectif de la recherche est de comprendre le lien entre les usages Internet des immigrants résidant à Calgary et leur intégration sociale. Pour ce faire, nous avons adopté une approche qualitative qui nous a permis d'identifier les usages sociaux influençant l'intégration dite de fonctionnement, c'est-à-dire qui permet aux nouveaux arrivants de fonctionner adéquatement dans le système du pays d'accueil, ainsi que le développement et le maintien du capital social des répondants. Les résultats nous permettent d'affirmer qu'Internet joue un rôle crucial dans l'intégration de fonctionnement, car son utilisation vient redéfinir la recherche d'emploi et l'apprentissage de la langue officielle de la société d'accueil. De plus, l'utilisation d'Internet favorise le développement de liens créant des ponts (« bridging ») entre la personne immigrante et sa société d'accueil en lui offrant un réseau de liens dits « faibles », c'est-à-dire « weak ties ». Les liens faibles sont les nouveaux liens que le nouvel arrivant va développer en rentrant en relation avec son pays d'accueil, qui va lui permettre d'évoluer et avancer. Ainsi, les personnes en contexte de mobilité développent des usages Internet qui viennent pallier les enjeux habituels d'intégration sociale. \n_____________________________________________________________________________ \nMOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : Internet, usages sociaux, intégration, immigration, TIC
