The Reinhold Txen Archive at the Institute of Geobotany, University of Hannover -creation of a relev databaseThe phytosociological relevs of the Reinhold Txen Archive at the Institute of Geobotany of the University of Hannover are being systematically transferred into a database.After the digitisation of a large part of the material, the comprehensive archive of Reinhold Txen (1899-1980) will offer an important basis for further research in landscape history and the natural sciences.A large part of the material is threatened by physical decay.The creation of the database ensures safe, long-term storage of the data and a modern access and utilisation medium.The relevs come from 25 European countries and Canada.The main focus of Txen's work, how ever, was northwestern Germany.All of the information on the usually handwritten relevs has been included.A conservative approach is taken to the assignment of species, using Txen's original nomenclature.A separate database was created for synonyms with links to current nomenclature.In addition, the rele vs were geo-referenced.The data can easily be linked to a geographical information system (GIS), thus opening opportunities for further analy sis and display.
