Abstract
This document is a handwritten copy of the original minutes from the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions in Craven County, North Carolina, dated June 21, 1730. The record opens with a deed of sale, in which a lot of land in Newbern (now New Bern, N.C.) is transferred to George Roberts. The transaction was duly acknowledged in court. Following this, the court records a petition from a group of dissenters requesting permission to construct a place of worship. The court's decision to grant this request is conditional upon the group's oath to behave peaceably and to uphold proper moral conduct. The rest of the document chronicles a series of individuals--such as John James, Samuel Harvey, John Brooks, and others--appearing before the court to acknowledge debts and offer sureties to ensure future court appearances and good behavior. The entries follow a consistent structure: names, declarations of indebtedness to the crown, pledged amounts (often £20), and details about the court's satisfaction with the arrangements. The reverse side of the document affirms that this copy was transcribed from a record book covering 1730-1746 and was presented to Wake Forest College through Professor W. L. Poteat. A faint note at the bottom remarks that June 21, 1730, fell on a Sunday; June 21, 1740, fell on a Saturday; and June 23, 1740 fell on a Monday.
