Ce mémoire tente de saisir la collection"L'arbre" de l'éditeur HMH Hurtubise dans son fonctionnement en tant qu'ensemble. La période étudiée a pour limites la naissance, en 1963, de ce qui est devenu le plus prestigieux et, de loin, le plus important regroupement d'oeuvres de fiction à l'époque où Claude Hurtubise dirigeait son entreprise, puis le départ de celui-ci, en 1974. À plus d'un titre,"L'arbre" préside à des réunions, d'auteurs et de genres, plus particulièrement, qui défient la notion même de collection. Notre étude a comme objectif premier d'en examiner les principales composantes pour ensuite en proposer une définition. Étant donné que la collection relève de l'initiative d'un éditeur d'expérience, la première partie de notre mémoire retrace les grands jalons de la carrière de Claude Hurtubise. En 1934 (il n'a alors que vingt ans), il est à la tête d'une revue d'avant-garde saillante dans la vie intellectuelle du Québec de l'époque. En 1960, à la faveur d'une Révolution tranquille qui bat son plein, il met sur pied les Éditions HMH limitée. Après cette mise en place historique est examinée l'évolution du regroupement. Les grandes théories de la sociologie des collections insistent sur l'importance pour celles-ci de se doter d'un principe organisateur. Notre étude fait ressortir l'influence décisive qu'a exercée le passé éditorial de Claude Hurtubise sur l'orientation de"L'arbre". Enfin, l'analyse de ses diverses caractéristiques démontre que la collection parvient à attribuer à son logo une signification précise. Sa prédilection pour les formes narratives brèves, contes, nouvelles, récits, et les rapports qu'elle entretient avec les Écrits du Canada français sont particulièrement éloquents à cet égard.
