L'insuline, découverte majeure du 20éme siècle a permis le traitement d'une maladie connue depuis l'antiquité et qui, jusqu'alors, restait toujours mortelle. Au vu de l'importance de ce traitement, nous avons décidé de retracer l'historique de l'insuline et de ses principaux acteurs au fil des siècles. Banting et Best sont mondialement connus pour être officiellement les scientifiques ayant isolé l'insuline et ont reçu pour cela le prix Nobel en 1923. N'oublions pas pour autant les nombreux précurseurs ayant travaillé sur le même thème, qui pour certains ont pressenti l'existence de la molécule sans réussir à la mettre en évidence, et qui ont inspiré les deux chercheurs canadiens. Grâce à cette découverte, l'insuline a pu être produite à des fins thérapeutiques à grande échelle. Depuis de nombreux progrès ont été àccomplis, aussi bien au niveau de la diversité et de la qualité des insulines, qu'au niveau du confort et de la maniabilité des modalités d'injections, permettant ainsi de s'approcher au plus prés de la sécrétion naturelle. L'histoire de l'insuline ne s'arrête sûrement pas là. Le prochain chapitre est déjà en train de s'écrire, avec les recherches sur d'autres voies thérapeutiques: autres formes d'administration, sous forme inhalée par exemple, pancréas artificiel, les greffes de pancréas et d'îlots de Langerhans.
