La thèse présente les résultats d’une recherche doctorale, tels qu’ils ont été établis dans plusieurs articles scientifiques et chapitres d’ouvrages académiques. La recherche s’intéresse aux trajectoires idéologiques des régionalismes de l’ouest canadien : leurs continuités, leurs transformations, qu’ils soient séparatistes ou autonomistes, du début du XXème siècle au début du XXIème siècle. Dans une perspective sociohistorique, la recherche établit une périodisation des régionalismes dans l’ouest, en fonction de certaines configurations sociopolitiques. En réalisant une analyse de contenu d’un corpus de programmes politiques, concentrée sur les « clôtures sociales » (social boundaries), elle opère une classification entre plusieurs idéaux-types de régionalismes dans l’ouest canadien, en fonction notamment de leur rapport au gouvernement fédéral et à certaines thématiques politiques. En prenant la rhétorique historique de « l’aliénation de l’ouest » comme fil conducteur, la recherche explique les articulations entre populisme et régionalisme. La recherche contribue à la théorie politique en clarifiant le concept de « populisme », aux fins de mieux comprendre les variations historiques et idéologiques des formations qui le mobilisent.
