Comme bien des pays, le Canada a connu un scandale de distribution publique de sang contaminé. Cette monographie traite de la lutte des victimes canadiennes du sang contaminé, qui réclamaient des conditions décentes de survie. La lutte a commencé en 1987 et s’est terminée en 2006, avec la décision du gouvernement de Stephen Harper d’indemniser toutes les victimes, bien que des pourparlers se poursuivent en 2007 sur certains aspects administratifs. Cette lutte peut être divisée en trois phases. La première, qui s’étend de 1987 à 1994, concerne les victimes infectées par le virus de l’immunodéficience humaine (VIH), le premier à contaminer les réserves de sang. La deuxième phase, qui débute en 1993, a trait aux victimes infectées par le virus de l’hépatite C (VHC). La troisième phase, qui commence en 1998, est relative aux victimes oubliées de l’hépatite C. Pour traiter de ces séquences de la lutte, la monographie comprend deux parties: la première concerne les personnes contaminées par le VIH et la seconde, celles infectées par le VHC.\nLa monographie permet d’identifier plusieurs éléments tant favorables que défavorables au succès de cette lutte. Parmi les premiers, on rencontre la nature du problème à l’origine de la lutte (qui suscite l’indignation), le nombre d’alliés et la bonne couverture des médias. Parmi les seconds, on peut retenir la faiblesse de l’identité dans la coalition et le manque de solidarité entre les victimes.
