Le mentorat est à la fois une relation interpersonnelle et un outil d’intervention sociale. Lorsqu’il réunit une personne québécoise, issue de la société d’accueil, et une personne immigrée récemment arrivée au Québec, on parle de mentorat interculturel. Il est notamment utilisé dans le milieu académique et de l’entreprise pour favoriser l’intégration des étudiants immigrants ou des nouveaux travailleurs. Dans un contexte démographique où se conjuguent le vieillissement de la population et l’immigration, je m’interroge sur des façons de préserver la cohésion sociale. En effet, les médiateurs interculturels jouent aujourd’hui un rôle prépondérant pour penser aux meilleurs moyens de créer un dialogue à la fois interculturel et intergénérationnel, et qui tienne compte des enjeux identitaires que connaît actuellement la province. En ce sens, les établissements d’enseignement secondaire ou universitaire s’avèrent représenter des espaces propices à ce dialogue. Ils sont d’une part un point de passage commun vers le monde du travail entre Québécois et néo-Québécois, et d’autre part un terrain propice à la participation citoyenne de tous et aux échanges mutuels de savoirs. Ma réflexion porte sur le rôle des médiateurs interculturels en tant que « veilleurs » des identités culturelles dans la construction d’un nouveau dialogue en ce début de décennie 2020. Je m’intéresse particulièrement aux activités d’échanges qui favorisent l’intégration sociale et professionnelle des personnes immigrantes. Les enjeux sont ici multiples. Il s’agit de penser la médiation interculturelle comme agent de création d’un espace de dialogue favorisant la transmission croisée des savoirs interculturels et intergénérationnels entre personnes aînées québécoises et personnes étudiantes immigrantes. Il s’agit également de penser la relation mentorale interculturelle comme un terrain d’apprentissage et d’engagement social mutuel et inclusif. Tout en préservant la sécurité culturelle des personnes mentores et mentorées, mais aussi celles des personnes médiatrices.
