La notion de bestiaire a connu ses lettres de noblesse durant le Moyen Age et doit se comprendre dans sa définition la plus simple à savoir qu'un bestiaire est un recueil de textes sur les animaux considérés comme réels tels qu'ils apparaissent dans La Bible. Au fil des siècles, cette notion n'a cessé de s'enrichir, de s'étoffer. Cette présente étude tente d'expliquer de quelle manière ce terme - le bestiaire - peut désigner un aspect de la littérature romanesque québécoise contemporaine à travers la lecture approfondie de quatre de ses auteurs: Anne Hébert, Jacques Poulin, Yves Beauchemin et Michel Tremblay. En effet, par le truchement de figures animales emblématiques comme le chat, le chien ou les oiseaux, ces auteurs ont élaboré tout un espace littéraire atypique, singulier et personnel. Afin d'expliciter la notion de bestiaire, notre travail de recherche et de réflexion s'est orienté autour de trois axes. Au préalable, nous avons abordé la notion en elle-même afin d'en définir à la fois le contenu , ainsi que les limites, pour, par la suite, la dépeindre et l'expliciter au coeur même de l'œuvre romanesque des auteurs étudiés. Ensuite, nous nous sommes attachés à aux aspects symboliques recouverts par ces dits animaux. Enfin, nous avons étudié la notion de langage pour expliquer de quelle manière l'animal s'impose au texte, certes par sa gestuelle et ses comportements, mais surtout par son langage. De plus, leur influence est telle que des métaphores animalières envahissent la langue des personnages qui parfois vont jusqu'à animaliser leurs comportements.
