Abstract
Generalmente è utilizzato nell’espressione muro a o di filaretti: muratura nella quale le pietre, di altezza pressoché costante, di piccole, ma più propriamente di medie dimensioni, sono disposte secondo filari orizzontali. \nEssa può ricollegarsi alla muratura eseguita con piccole pietre regolarizzate alla meglio e disposte in filari, definita in Francia petit appareil e che, secondo alcuni autori, avrebbe sostituito l’opus quadratum romano nella Gallia altomedievale. È tuttavia nel XII secolo che si diffuse su larga scala, prevalentemente in Toscana, la tecnica muraria romanica ‘a filaretto’. Rimase in uso comunemente fino al secolo successivo, per essere poi in parte sostituita da murature in pietrame, con posa in opera irregolare o in mattoni, anche se non mancano esempi più tardi. \nPer realizzare muri ‘in filaretto’ sono utilizzate pietre di natura differente (alberese, pietra forte) anche sotto forma di ciottoli di fiume. \nIn taluni esempi si trovano alternate pietre di colore diverso per realizzare raffinati effetti bicromi (marmo bianco e serpentinite nel Duomo di Siena, XII-XIV sec.). Allo stesso scopo filaretti in pietra si trovano alternati a ricorsi di mattoni (chiesa di Monte Siepi a Chiusdino, Siena, sec. XII).
