L'objectif de ce travail est de faire le point sur la connaissance des principales intoxications rencontrées en France et au Québec dans l'espèce équine. Dans ce but, l'auteur, après avoir rappelé des informations générales (particularités anatomiques et physiologiques du Cheval, principales races équines nord-américaines et revue bibliographique des intoxications équines), dresse l'état des lieux des intoxications équines en France puis au Québec, au cours des 20 et 30 dernières années. Quatre des intoxications abordées dans les 2 et 3èmes parties, sont ensuite traitées en détail : l'intoxication à l'érable rouge (Acer rubrum), la toxicité de la phénylbutazone (relativement communes au Québec), la myoglobinurie atypique des équidés et la leucoencéphalomalacie (récemment décrites en France). Les intoxications sont des évènements rares chez les équidés, notamment au Québec en raison de la rigueur du climat et des particularités de logement qui en découlent. Il est difficile, pour cette province canadienne, d'établir une réelle hiérarchisation (en fréquence) des différents types d'intoxications. En France, les principales classes toxiques en cause sont essentiellement les pesticides et les plantes, bien que les médicaments et les polluants soient aussi impliqués mais dans une moindre mesure. Cette étude met également en évidence l'importance des centres anti-poisons animaliers dans l'évaluation de la prévalence des intoxications équines dans un pays ou une région.
